The Odyssey School is a K-8 public Expeditionary Learning School in Denver, CO. Expeditionary Learning is a national school design centered on constructivist pedagogy, student-centered projects, civic engagement, and the democratic classroom with roots in Outward Bound.
As the founding art teacher in 1999, I worked with teachers, school designers, and administrators to create an art curriculum that integrated contemporary art practices with the big ideas in each classroom’s content. This kind of art integration used art to enchant the content, rather than just illustrate the content.
In those early years of Odyssey, I also adapted the documentation practices from Reggio Emilia to Expeditionary Learning’s visual school culture. See my documentation link for more on that.
I taught art at Odyssey until 2012.
